Kangaroos are spotted at dusk on the lawns most evenings. Sambar and Spotted deer are regular morning and evening visitors — the private hill trek gives a very high chance of a deer sighting. The property has alpacas, horses, and Persian sheep. Koalas are occasionally spotted. Native birds include King Parrots (that may eat from your hand), Black Cockatoos, kookaburras, and various bush birds. Barking Owls are commonly heard at night and produce a loud wailing cry — do not be alarmed.
Are there domestic farm animals on the property?
Yes. The property has horses, alpacas, and Persian sheep for guests to enjoy on the grounds.
Is there a zoo nearby?
Yes. Mansfield Zoo (~25 min) is set on 30 acres and features Australia’s largest collection of exotic and native animals — guests can hand-feed lions and deer. Guests of The Black Sparrow receive an exclusive experience including walking the dingoes on weekends if notified in advance. This experience is not available to the general public.
Are there movie theatres nearby?
Yes. Mansfield Armchair Cinema (~20 min) at 1 Chenery St, Mansfield is a fully digital, not-for-profit cinema screening new releases and arthouse films. It features reclining leather armchairs, large beanbags, and the on-site Luna Bar serving coffee, beer, and wine.
What is the closest ski resort to The Black Sparrow?
Mt Buller, approximately 47 km away (~35–45 min drive). Australia’s largest and most accessible alpine resort — 300 ha of skiable terrain, 80 runs, 22 lifts. Snow season: June – late September, peaking July–August. Ski hire and retail are available in Mansfield township, ~25 km from the resort.
How far is The Black Sparrow from Melbourne?
Approximately 230–250 km — roughly a 2.5 to 3-hour drive via Mansfield and the Mansfield-Woods Point Road into the Howqua Valley.

Both the 3-Bedroom Spa Cottage and the 3-Bedroom Premium Cottage sleep up to 9 guests. The Premium Cottage is larger with a modern kitchen (dishwasher), multiple living zones, and a separate dining area — better suited to larger groups. The Spa Cottage includes an in-room spa bath.
Do all rooms have a spa bath?
No. The 1-Bedroom Chalet with Spa, 2-Bedroom Cottage with Spa, and 3-Bedroom Spa Cottage include in-room spa baths. The 2-Bedroom Cottage (no spa) and 3-Bedroom Premium Cottage do not. The Premium Cottage has a ceramic fireplace and dishwasher instead.
Are there golfing facilities nearby?
Yes. Golf and mini golf facilities are available in Mansfield township, approximately 25 km from the resort.
Is there horse riding nearby?
Yes — excellent horse riding is available right at Howqua. Top operators include: Watsons Mountain Country Rides (Boorolite — 1 to 3-hr rides to multi-day Howqua River adventures); Buckle Up Bushrides (Boorolite Valley — day rides and multi-day packages); and McCormack’s Mountain Valley Trail Rides (Merrijig — 2-hr to overnight treks to Craig’s Hut and Mt Stirling).
Is there off-road 4WD driving nearby?
Yes. The Howqua region offers excellent 4WD trails from scenic river crossings to challenging ridgeline climbs. Popular routes include Sheepyard Flat to Craig’s Hut, the 16 Mile Jeep Track, Bluff Link & Bluff Track, and the Howqua Hills Historic Area track.
Are there biking and trekking trails nearby?
Yes. The Howqua Hills Historic Area and Alpine National Park are premier destinations for biking and trekking. Highlights include the Howqua River Walk (12.4 km with river crossings), the Howqua Hills Heritage Walk (4 km, Grade 2–3), Mt Timbertop Loop (4.3 km), and world-class mountain biking at Mt Buller and Mt Stirling (~35 min).
Is hunting available nearby?
Hunting on The Black Sparrow property is strictly forbidden. However, the surrounding Alpine National Park and State Forests offer public land hunting for Sambar deer, foxes, rabbits, and seasonal waterfowl. Popular base camps include Sheepyard Flat, 7 Mile Flat, and Upper Howqua. Appropriate licences and regulations apply.
Can I swim in Lake Eildon?
Yes — Lake Eildon is directly across the road. The natural shoreline is muddy, so most guests prefer the on-site resort pool. Guests with boats can access the lake for water sports.
Is The Black Sparrow pet-friendly?
Yes. Pets are permitted in all accommodation types at a surcharge of AU$35 per day. Guests must call in advance — this cannot be arranged via online booking alone.
What are check-in and check-out times?
Check-in: 2:00 PM. Check-out: 10:00 AM. Reception open daily 10 AM – 8 PM. Guests arriving after 8 PM must contact the property in advance.
Can The Black Sparrow host weddings and events?

Is there accommodation not listed online?
Yes. A large house and a ‘Granny with a Caravan’ option are not listed in the online booking system. If the booking page shows no availability, call Earl directly on 61 434 654 332.
